Transparency International Romania welcomes the Government’s efforts to join as many actions and initiatives of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as possible, as well as its decision to formally request Romania’s accession to OECD.

Romania’s involvement in over 40 OECD committees and subcommittees has supported its progress in developing and strengthening its market economy, as well as strengthening the democracy and the rule of law. Romania stood out in the organization through its firm commitment to anticorruption policies as well as its tireless approach on the participation to the OECD Anti-Corruption Network for Eastern Europe and Central Asia – OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría’s statemented during the special OECD council meeting on June 9th in Paris.

In this context we believe that Romania’s alignment to the standards and requirements of this international forum, whose main objective is centered on the economic performance of its member states, is set to encourage a sustainable economic development and to contribute to raising the quality and standard of living and to reducing poverty.

Accession is an important objective both for the public and the private sector. In a democratic state, the public sector’s goal is to offer an effective legislative and institutional infrastructure which insures the framework to conduct highly successful economic activities, while protecting the public interest and citizens’ rights.

We thusly express our full availability to support these efforts in the areas where Transparency International Romania expertise brings added value, staying true to our mission of contributing to “a fair and honest Romania, free from corruption”.
